Pepo
Pepo is an MSX game project based on the Dash Kappei anime. My contribution was the graphics and pixel art, working within the character and the limits of the machine to capture the spirit of the show on 8-bit hardware.
The game
The goal was to translate the energy of the series into a small MSX game: readable characters, punchy colour and screens that stay clear within the modest resolution and palette of the machine.
Building the levels
Part of the development process happened in a custom editor used to lay out the game's stages. This screen shows one of the levels being built — placing and arranging the scenario piece by piece.
Working with a dedicated editor made it possible to design each stage around the hardware's constraints while keeping the layout tidy and easy to iterate.
