PapiVox

PapiVox is a lightweight voxel editor originally created as part of Papinkoo, built around a simple idea: creating, animating and exporting voxel artwork should be quick and direct. Instead of trying to reproduce a full 3D package, the tool focuses on the operations that are actually useful when working with small voxel scenes and animated objects.

The editor uses its own .papivox project format and brings modelling, animation, colour management, layers and export tools together in a compact workspace.

Voxel modelling

At the centre of PapiVox is the voxel modeller. Objects can be built and edited directly in the viewport, keeping the workflow focused on shape, volume and colour rather than on the complexity of a traditional 3D application.

The goal is to make the construction of small characters, props and scenes feel immediate: add voxels, remove them, reshape the object and continue working without leaving the main editor.

Timeline and animation

PapiVox includes a frame-by-frame timeline for animating voxel objects. Each frame can contain a different state of the model, making it possible to create walk cycles, small character actions, moving props and other simple animations inside the same tool used to build the artwork.

This keeps modelling and animation closely connected: a frame can be edited directly, compared with the rest of the sequence and adjusted without having to export the model to another application first.

Palette library

A built-in palette library makes colour selection part of the project workflow. Palettes can be reused while modelling and painting, helping different objects and scenes share a consistent visual language.

It also makes it easy to work with deliberately limited colour sets, something especially useful for retro-inspired artwork and stylised voxel graphics.

Layer system

Scenes can be organised into layers, allowing different parts of a model or composition to be separated while they are being edited. The active layer can be selected from the editor so that work remains focused on the intended part of the scene.

This is useful both for organisation and for more complex compositions, where characters, props or other groups of voxels need to remain independent from one another.

Export

PapiVox is designed to move artwork out of the editor as easily as it is created. Projects can be exported as 3D content, as rendered images or as animations, covering both real-time 3D workflows and traditional 2D presentation.

This means the same voxel scene can be used as a 3D asset, turned into a still image, or rendered as an animated sequence depending on the needs of the project.

Dark mode

The interface also includes a dark mode for working with a lower-luminance workspace. It changes the appearance of the editor without changing the project itself, providing an alternative interface for long sessions or simply for users who prefer a darker environment.
